Domino is a game that requires a large amount of skill and strategy. The players must establish where they want to go on the domino trail and then follow that path. They also must determine what they’re going to count as a score.
Depending on the rules of the game, domino can be played with one or two sides and doubles may be either spinners or non-spinners. They can also be played crosswise or lengthwise.
Origin
Domino is a game that has evolved with the people and cultures that play it. The name derives from the Latin word dominus, meaning lord or master, and it carries the connotation of dominance and power.
The game originated in Italy during the 1700s and made its way to France where it became a fad. Its popularity spread, and the first sets were produced with different materials and colors.
Neena Thurman, better known as Domino, is a mutant who possesses the ability to alter the laws of probability in her favor and is a skilled weapons expert and combatant. She works as a freelance mercenary and is an important ally of Cable, the leader of the mutant superhero team X-Force. She can also use her psionic powers to control minds.
Rules
Nearly all domino games follow similar rules. Generally, players score points when the ends of the line of play total a multiple of five. The ends of a double that are exposed must match (one’s touch one’s, two’s touch two’s, etc).
The player with the highest double begins play. Alternatively, the winner of the previous game can begin the next hand. Players may also decide to draw lots or have the person sitting to their right open the first game.
Each player has 15 seconds to make a play. If a player cannot play a tile within this time, they must pass. During the game, it is important that players are respectful of their opponents. If there is a dispute over a call, the players should raise their hands or call a UDL official to resolve it.
Variations
Dominoes are rectangular tiles that feature a line in the middle to divide them visually into two squares. Each square is marked with an arrangement of spots or pips, like those on a die. Dominoes that have more pips are considered heavier than those with fewer pips.
Domino effects are low probability, high consequence events the modeling and safety assessment of which is difficult. The resulting uncertainty is significant and can be addressed by advanced methods of probabilistic risk assessment, such as Bayesian network technology and Monte Carlo simulation.
There are many variants of domino, including Mexican train, chicken foot, and muggins. All of these games involve adding tiles to a domino line. The first player places a tile, and subsequent players must add a tile with the same number of open ends to that same line.
Materials
Dominos are traditionally made of a material such as bone, wood or ivory. They are twice as long as they are wide and have a line or ridge in the center that contains an arrangement of dots similar to those on a die. These markings are known as pips and mark the identity of the domino.
Many different types of materials have been used in the making of dominoes over the years. Some of the most common are plastics, metals and stones. There are also special domino sets that use foam for a novel look and more durable play surface.
Other accessories for domino include a domino rack, score pad and pencil. These will allow players to keep track of scores and determine who has the most points at the end of a game.
Scoring
In many domino games players score points by counting the pips in opponents’ hands at the end of a hand or game. Other scoring methods are also used. These include summing the exposed ends of the line of play or counting the exposed sides of the first double, which is called a spinner.
To start a game, the players draw tiles from the pool and establish who starts. The player with the highest double usually begins, but rules vary from game to game. If no one has a high double, the player with the heaviest tile may start. The dominoes are arranged in a line, and the player who is first to play lays the next tile. Then the rest of the players follow.
