Domino is a classic board game that can be enjoyed by all ages. It is also a great way to get your kids moving and doing some exercise!
When the chances of scoring points start to decline use blocking strategies as much as possible. Try to have tiles in your hand that can change the board count by a multiple of five.
Rules
The game of domino has many variants. The rules vary slightly from one version to the next, but most have similar fundamentals. Each player draws seven domino tiles and places them in a line on the table. Then, each player adds a tile to the chain by matching its end to a domino already in place. The value of the chains is determined by the number of pips on each end. Each player’s train may be marked as either public or private. Leaving a mark on a train prevents other players from adding to it, but the owner of the train can remove the marker in subsequent turns if they are able to play a domino with a matching end.
When the players run out of pieces, the round ends. The winner is the player who has the lowest total value of unplaced domino tiles, subtracting his or her own from each opponent’s. This score is rounded to the nearest multiple of five.
Materials
Dominoes are small, flat rectangular blocks made of bone, wood, or plastic. Each domino has a face divided into two parts, with one side bearing from one to six dots, called pips, and the other blank or patterned. The number of pips on a domino determines its suit and the type of game it can play. A complete set of dominoes contains 28 tiles.
Traditionally, European-style domino sets were made of materials such as silver lip ocean pearl oyster shell (mother of pearl), ivory, or ebony with contrasting white and black pips. Some sets are still available in these natural materials, which have a more interesting look and often feel heavier than polymer dominoes.
The domino structure amplifies interlayer coupling forces to ensure structural stability, a critical feature of 2D materials. As shown in Fig. 2a, the simulated FFT diffraction patterns of the GaTe domino-structured material coincide closely with the experimental measurements, validating the ISMG strategy.
Variations
There are a number of different domino games. The most basic game is played with a double-six set for two players. The dominoes are shuffled and placed face down to form a stock or boneyard. Each player draws seven tiles from the stock. The player holding the heaviest tile begins play. A line of dominoes is then made on the table and each player places one tile into the line. This is known as a set or down and is what sets the direction of the game.
A double tile may be placed endwise or sidewise, depending on the holder’s preference. Some players prefer to draw if they cannot play a domino, while others choose to score the difference between their own and their opponent’s unplaced dominoes. When the player wins the game, they receive points equal to the total value of all outstanding dominoes. Some games also allow for playing doubles to other dominoes.
Scoring
Domino scoring is based on the number of spots or pips on a domino tile. The dominoes are arranged in a line with each player taking turns placing their tiles on the line in such a way that it matches the value of one side to the other. A double domino placed at a right angle to the line can act as a spinner, and new tiles may be played on all three open sides of it.
When the players cannot play a domino, they pass their turn. The first player to reach a set target score wins. The pips left on each player’s remaining domino tiles are compared and the winning player scores the difference.
