Origins of Roulette

Roulette is a casino game that involves spinning a ball on a wheel and betting on which number it will land. Players can bet on a single number, various groupings of numbers or whether they are odd or even.

Although there are many betting systems that claim to beat the odds, roulette is a pure game of chance. To maximize your winning chances, set a budget and play within it.

Origin

There are a lot of stories out there about the origins of roulette, but one thing is for sure: it was invented in France. The game is played with a wheel that has 38 (or 37 on modern European/Latin American tables) divisions, and players place bets by placing chips on a betting area of the table. Many fanciful stories exist about the game’s creation, including that it was invented by 17th-century French math wizard Blaise Pascal and that it was brought to France from China by Dominican Monks. These claims are probably false, but they do point to the fact that the game evolved from older games like hoca and portique.
