Origins
There are a few theories as to where and when the game of roulette first came into existence. One of the most common is that it was invented in the 17th century by Blaise Pascal, a French mathematician who was trying to create a perpetual motion machine. He inadvertently created a spinning wheel that would later become the basis for roulette. However, there are also records of games similar to roulette that were played long before Pascal’s invention.
Another theory is that the game originated in China and was brought to Europe by Dominican monks who spread it as they traveled throughout the world. Other possible ancestors of the game include English games like Hoca and even-odd and Italian games such as Biribi and Lotto Reale.
